This session explores how to read and analyze a script through the lens of a director or lead storyteller. Using David Ball’s Backwards & Forwards as a foundation, participants will examine the structure of a play, uncover action within the text, and develop their own interpretive voice. The session traces the journey from first read to first rehearsal, offering practical tools for shaping a clear and communicable vision. While centered on directing, this work is also valuable for designers, actors, choreographers and anyone engaged in storytelling.

Alex Gonzalez is a Cuban-American director and theatermaker dedicated to creating collaborative spaces where bold, authentic storytelling can flourish. He is the founding Artistic Director of Latiné Theater Lab, a new company committed to uplifting Latiné voices and making theater more accessible to diverse communities. With a background in arts education, human resources, and leadership, Alex brings a unique blend of creative vision, strategic thinking, and community-building to every project.
