Laban for Dance

Experiential Anatomy

It’s one thing to talk about joints, muscles, and fascial chains. It’s another to experience the body in motion, with a focus on each of those. This course will explore movement exercises to increase both sensation and function in the body. You may participate in the exercises as both teacher and student. If recently injured or undergoing surgery, you must have been cleared by a doctor for physical exercise to participate. You will leave this workshop able to say:

      • I have the  tools to increase both functional and expressive movement.

      • I have the tools to guide myself through movement experiences that help me deepen their own body awareness and prepare my body for the movement required of me.

      • I know how to advocate for myself and what I and my body need.

Expressivity, Virtuosity, Longevity

This workshop offers, through movement and writing exercises, ways to stay healthy and embodied while meeting high physical demands. Develop self-care practices to prevent injury and/or burnout. Learn practices to develop excellent physical function for to stay healthy. The L/BMA system holds that knowing myself allows me to know others, so you will also gain an understanding of  how body knowledge/prejudice affects expressive choice. You will leave this workshop able to say:

      • I recognize how my own body knowledge and preferences are serving (or not) my expressive/creative choices.

      • I can use movement as a way of knowing myself.

      • I have the tools to take care of myself, physically, and emotionally.

Introduction to the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System

This workshop is an introduction to L/BMS, using the categories of Body, Effort, Shape, and Space. A great primer for dancers enter university concert dance programs without a lot of exposure to somatics and/or modern dance. You will leave this workshop able to say:

      • I understand the categories of Body, Effort, Shape, and Space, and how I currently use them in my dancing.

      • I have knowledge of the work of Rudolph Laban and Irmgard Bartenieff.

      • I am aware of the Patterns of Total Body Connectivity and how to use them to prepare myself for the technical movement required of me.
